Field Trips:Town of Gilbert Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch
In 1986, the Town of Gilbert made a commitment to reuse 100 percent of its effluent water. Its 110-acre Riparian Preserve reflects the Town’s desire to use innovative and unique approaches to develop water resources in ways that consider open space, as well as educational and recreational opportunities. The Preserve features seven water recharge basins that occupy 70 acres and are filled with treated effluent, which percolates into the aquifer for future use. One of the ponds has a unique distribution stream that mimics the action of an ephemeral desert stream. A lake filled with reclaimed water is designated as an urban fishing resource through the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
