Field Trips: The City of Scottsdale Water Campus
In the early 1990s, the City of Scottsdale constructed a state-of-the art water treatment and storage facility on 143 acres (58 hectares). The facility treats both wastewater effluent 20 million gallons per day (MGD; (76,000 m3/day) and water from the Colorado River (via the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal (50 MGD or 190,000 m3/day). Another 14 MGD (53,200 m3/day) of water can be treated through an advanced water treatment consisting of microfiltration and reverse-osmosis systems. This water is then recharged using 27 shallow (180-foot) vadose zone wells; the conventionally treated CAP water is recharged directly to the aquifer using a deep (1050-foot) well. The plant blends into the surrounding desert community beautifully.
